*Should teachers have to go on Strike-I want students to stay productive, please continue working on your science fair projects, and lessons in EVERFI*
6 - 8 CLASS CURRICULUM INFORMATION
Science education has recently evolved from the Illinois Science Standards to The Next Generation Science Standards. In addition, students are no longer assessed using the yearly 7th grade ISAT, but now in 5th and 8th grade with "ISA" Illinois Science Assessment which reflects the NGSS.
Chicago Public Schools has adopted AMPLIFY Science as the most up to date curriculum to support the new standards for science. AMPLIFY will be implemented in grades 6 - 8, it will integrate the three disciplines earth science, life science and physical science each year of middle school and incorporate the Common Core standards for reading comprehension of informational text, writing skills as well as claims & evidence with reasoning.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*AMPLIFY is an online interactive course between the teacher and students in the class. Because it is web based, cps internet usage policy and computer device etiquette is EXPECTED. If students are aggressive with devices or browsing unauthorized websites, students will loose their computer privileges and have to alternatively work out of a hard-copy AMPLIFY notebook.*
I encourage you to talk to your children about what they are learning in science. At any point, that you want to see their work, you can visit the AMPLIFY CLASSROOM. You can log in with the blue clever button and your child's CPS GOOGLE credentials.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I communicate and provide resources to your children on a regular basis through the GoogleClassroom which is part of our CPS / Google account Suit. You are welcome to join in, in order to view items that your child is using, That classroom code for 2019/2020 school year is aphlppw
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Classic Experiments: On occasion I will implement investigations which reflect the scientific method as one of many ways of learning to conduct an experiment, and to stay familiar with the process for engaging in the science fair, which will be required yearly. See the science fair page for details.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STEM Challenges: These are special projects that will take place on an average of one or two per quarter. Students will choose a group to work with. I will give them a "challenge" and they will use simple materials and the science engineering (STEM) practices to design and build a prototype which groups will test out. Groups will compare and contrast best techniques for that prototype. These Challenges are also designed to develop collaboration skills, inspire our students to peruse engineering and to have fun with learning!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Association for the Wolf Lake Initiative: 2x a year, students will learn about local environmental topics. They will create posters which depict summer & winter recreation and stewardship activities at Wolf Lake. Posters will be graded & submitted to the Association for the Wolf Lake Initiative, for use as advertisement for their events. Students of winning posters will be recognized at the Hammond Environmental Education Center and awarded cash prizes!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Open Lands & School Gardening: Grissom school has an existing gardening team comprised of both students and staff. Students with a deeper interest are encouraged to join the garden club. The school garden will be integrated into our school year of learning to promote a sense of ownership, community, responsibility, botany, environmental sciences. Throughout the year we will both tend to the garden and make observations of plants & living specimens in the gardens. Data will be collected by the students and reported back to the Openlands organization as an ongoing school wide citizen science project. We are thankful to be partners of the very generous Openlands & Big Green organizations!
