SCIENCE FAIR / QED
Due Dates:
*DUE IN IT'S ENTIRETY ON NOVEMBER 26, THE DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING BREAK
*TOPIC & PARENT PARTNER PERMISSION FORM DUE FRIDAY OCTOBER 4TH
*12 SOURCES SHEET DUE ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 10TH
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Science fair is a required project for grades 6 - 8.
It is worth 3 grades:
the research paper is a project grade
the board is a homework grade
the oral presentation is assignment grade
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will walk students through the research portion making sure that they have understanding of what is expected and how to do it. They will be expected to continue their work from class at home.
The board is essentially a creative display of their research, data, results and photographs of their process / progress.
It is understood that students are still building their presentation skills, and maybe nervous or shy standing up presenting in front of their peers. They should be prepared and able to speak about what they've learned from their project without reading off of the board. I am not looking for perfection, or memorization of every detail of what is on the board, but more of what they did, how they did it, what intrigued them to study the chosen topic and what they learned.
I want students to have fun with science, not stress over a huge project. For that reason I encourage them to choose a topic that is interesting to them, and will do all that I can to support them along the way.
Moving forward..............
Students who excel on the project within the classroom presentation will move onto the school fair.
4 winners of the school fair will move onto the regional. This is usually hosted at Chicago State University.
Students who excel at the regional have the opportunity to move forward to the City fair in January of 2020, hosted at UIC. This is an opportunity to win a great amount of cash prizes and move onto the state or national science fair! It is a very exciting event.
Those that choose to do a project in the category of math have the option of participating in Chicago's math symposium hosted on December 7 at Walter Payton College Prep.
